Preventive Dentistry

Routine Dental Exams

Regular dental exams are one of the simplest ways to protect your teeth and gums before small concerns become larger problems. During a routine dental exam at our Downtown Vancouver dental clinic, your dentist checks your teeth, gums, bite and oral tissues for signs of cavities, gum inflammation, worn restorations, grinding and other changes. Most patients benefit from an exam every six to twelve months, depending on their oral health. These visits are also a good opportunity to discuss tooth sensitivity, bleeding gums, jaw discomfort or cosmetic concerns. Detecting decay early may allow for simpler treatment and help prevent the need for more extensive dental work later.

Dental Cleanings / Hygiene

Think of a professional cleaning as a reset button for your mouth. Even with careful brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into tartar along the gumline, and only dental instruments can remove it. At our downtown Vancouver clinic, a registered dental hygienist gently scales away that buildup, polishes each tooth and measures your gum pockets to catch early signs of gum disease. You also get practical, judgment-free coaching on the spots your toothbrush keeps missing. Most adults do well with a cleaning every six months, while people with a history of gum problems may need visits every three to four months. The payoff is smoother teeth, fresher breath, fewer surface stains and a lower risk of gum disease.

Digital X-rays & Diagnostics

Worried about radiation? Digital dental X-rays use a fraction of the exposure of traditional film, and the images appear on screen within seconds so you can review them with your dentist in real time. That matters, because many dental problems begin where no one can see them: between teeth, under old fillings, below the gumline and inside the jawbone. Digital X-rays can help detect hidden cavities, infections, bone loss, cysts and impacted wisdom teeth, sometimes before noticeable symptoms develop. They are also essential for planning implants, root canals and orthodontic treatment safely. At Howe Dental in downtown Vancouver, we only take the images your situation calls for, based on your age, risk level and dental history.

Oral Cancer Screening

It takes about five minutes, involves no needles and could make a lifesaving difference. An oral cancer screening is a careful visual and hands-on check of your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, the floor and roof of your mouth, your throat and your neck. Your dentist looks and feels for red or white patches, lumps, thickened tissue and sores that have not healed within two weeks. Oral cancer is far easier to treat when it is caught early, which is why we include this check as part of regular exams at our downtown Vancouver clinic. Smokers, regular drinkers and people with a history of HPV face a higher risk. If anything looks unusual, we arrange prompt follow-up or a specialist referral.

Custom Mouthguards & Nightguards

One appliance, two very different jobs. A custom guard is moulded from impressions of your own teeth, so it fits snugly, stays in place and lets you breathe and speak more easily than a boil-and-bite version from the store.

  • Sports mouthguards cushion your teeth and jaw against hits in hockey, basketball, soccer, rugby and martial arts, helping prevent chipped, cracked or knocked-out teeth.
  • Nightguards protect against grinding and clenching during sleep (bruxism), a habit linked to worn enamel, cracked teeth, morning headaches and jaw pain.

Many downtown Vancouver patients clench without realizing it, especially during stressful periods. If your dentist notices signs of grinding or clenching, a custom nightguard may be recommended to help protect your teeth from further wear and damage.

Fluoride Treatments

Is fluoride only for kids? Not at all. A professional fluoride treatment is a quick varnish or gel applied after your cleaning to strengthen enamel and help reverse the earliest stage of tooth decay. It takes about a minute, tastes mild and requires no special recovery, though we may ask you to avoid eating for a short time afterward. Children benefit as their adult teeth come in, but adults can gain just as much, particularly anyone with frequent cavities, dry mouth from medication, receding gums with exposed roots, sensitive teeth, or braces and aligners that make cleaning harder. Ask about fluoride at your next checkup at Howe Dental in downtown Vancouver; it is one of the most affordable forms of protection available.

Dental Sealants

Parents often ask how to stop cavities before they start, and sealants are one of the best answers. The chewing surfaces of back teeth are full of deep grooves where food and bacteria settle, and toothbrush bristles struggle to reach them. A sealant is a thin, tooth-coloured coating painted into those grooves, then hardened with a light to form a smooth, protective shield. There is no drilling and no freezing, and each tooth takes only a few minutes, so even young children handle it easily. Sealants work best when applied soon after the permanent molars erupt, typically around ages six and twelve, and they can protect those surfaces for years. Children’s & Teen Dentistry

Good habits start early, and our approach grows with your child. At Howe Dental in downtown Vancouver, we keep visits short, friendly and positive at every stage:

  • Toddlers: a first visit by age one, gentle tooth counting and tips for parents on brushing, bottles and teething.
  • School-age kids: cleanings, fluoride, sealants, tooth-coloured fillings and a watchful eye on how adult teeth and the jaw are developing.
  • Teens: guidance on wisdom teeth, sports mouthguards, orthodontic options and habits such as snacking and energy drinks.

Our goal is for children to feel comfortable in the dental chair, so they grow into adults who don't fear the dentist. The Canadian Dental Association recommends a first visit within six months of the first tooth.

Space Maintainers

When a baby tooth comes out too early, from decay or an accident, a chain reaction can follow. The neighbouring teeth start to tilt into the empty space. The adult tooth underneath loses its path. It may then erupt crooked, get blocked, or crowd the teeth around it, and that often means longer orthodontic treatment later. A space maintainer breaks the chain. This small, custom appliance, usually a thin metal band and wire, holds the gap open until the permanent tooth is ready to come through. Maintainers can be fixed or removable, are comfortable once children get used to them, and are removed when they are no longer needed. Our downtown Vancouver dentists will advise whether your child needs one after an early tooth loss.

Tooth Pain or Swelling

Toothache keeping you up at night? Here is what to do:

  • Call us first: Call us at (604) 558-4242 as soon as possible and let our team know you are experiencing a dental emergency. We will help you arrange the earliest appropriate appointment available.
  • Ease the pain safely: rinse with warm salt water and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed. Never place aspirin directly on the gum.
  • Watch for red flags: swelling that spreads to your eye or neck, fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing needs a hospital emergency department right away.

Tooth pain and gum swelling usually point to deep decay, a cracked tooth or an abscess. At our downtown Vancouver clinic, we find the cause with an exam and X-ray, relieve the pain and treat the source, whether that means a filling, a root canal or an extraction.

Broken or Chipped Teeth

Not every break is the same. A small chip on the edge of a front tooth is mostly cosmetic and can often be repaired in one visit with tooth-coloured bonding. A larger fracture that removes part of a back tooth usually needs a crown to hold it together. A break that exposes the inner nerve, often signalled by sharp pain or a pink dot in the centre, may require a root canal before the tooth is restored. Whatever the size, act quickly: rinse your mouth with warm water, save any fragments in milk, and press a cold compress on your cheek to limit swelling. Then call our downtown Vancouver office so we can protect the tooth before a small crack spreads.

Lost Fillings or Crowns

Don't panic, and don't throw it away. When a filling or crown comes loose, the tooth underneath is suddenly exposed and may feel sharp or sensitive to hot and cold. Keep the crown in a small container and bring it with you; if it is undamaged and the tooth is healthy, we can often clean it and cement it back in place. Until your appointment, chew on the other side, avoid sticky or very hard foods, and cover any rough edge with sugar-free gum or temporary dental cement from a pharmacy. Never use household glue. If the crown can't be reused, we will place a new filling or make a new crown. Call our downtown Vancouver clinic as soon as you notice the problem.

Injuries or Trauma

With a knocked-out tooth, the first 60 minutes matter most. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown rather than the root. If dirty, gently rinse it without scrubbing. Try to place it back into its socket if possible. Otherwise, keep it in milk and seek emergency dental care immediately. Do not attempt to reinsert a baby tooth. Sports collisions, falls, cycling accidents and slips on wet sidewalks can also loosen teeth, push them out of position or crack them below the gumline. At Howe Dental in downtown Vancouver, we stabilize injured teeth, check the jaw and soft tissues, and schedule follow-up visits to monitor the nerve, since damage can show up weeks later. If you also hit your head or lost consciousness, go to a hospital first.
